"Experience is never limited, and it is never complete it is an immense
sensibility, a kind of huge spider-web of the finest silken threads suspended
in the chamber of consciousness, and catching every air-borne particle in its
tissue."
Henry James
The first project was making tea, at first the purpose of the task was
ambiguous. However, after the task was completed, I realised things that
I was not aware of due to the automaticity of making tea.
Making tea is normally a slow process, and consequently the aim of this task
was to make it motivating and enjoyable. To capture the interesting moments
of the tea-making process, differing camera placements and techniques were
utilised as well as accelerating the clip while using a joyful soundtrack.
Things that were learnt by performing this task were:
- The realization and awareness of the otherwise automated
tasks that take place in the steps of the tea-making process.
- Innovative and different camera placements and techniques
were learned through the exchange of information with
class mates or the research that was conducted for this task.
- Diverse and creative ways to make "uninteresting" phenomena
pleasurable and interesting.
- Recognizing the differences between "real" and unreal.
Stop motion, a series of numerous photos taken while the object of
interest is in motion. This was my first attempt at learning this new
technique that involves the combination of both photography and film.
The initial trial aimed to capture everyday nature, in this instance, sunset.
This required the camera to be placed in a motionless position with a wide
angle lens. Some difficulty was encountered whilst keeping track of the ISO
because of the constant change in lighting. After capturing over 1000 images,
the challenge was then to learn a simple way of gathering all the images
together to create a sequence. Despite previous experience with Adobe After
Effects, this task allowed for more learning to take place with the program.
The final outcome demonstrated time throughout the day.
The second trial was established to gain more experience with the stop
motion technique in movement. This step focused on moving objects
(drying clothes line). This illustrated movement resulting from the wind
which verified the existence of forces that are not seen by the naked eye.
Things that were learnt through this development :
- A new technical skill was gained for creativity and
presentation
- Exploring nature in depth and time
- Discovering all the different tones in shadow and
colour through movement of light
- Achieving a technique that demonstrates an unseen
force through stop motion and film
This assessment required a scale model of a certain room in the house
to be built from sold material . in this case foam board was chosen as
the preferred material to obtain strength and physical appearance.
Due to the detail needed for the model the task was at first challenging,
this time consuming exercise then converted into a new enjoyable practical skill.
The stop motion demonstrates the time that was taken into achieving this task
and also increasing more awareness to thing that are normally done in the room.
This enhanced the way stop motion was being utilised as way of development
This enhanced the way stop motion was being utilised as way of development
and presentation documentation.
Things that were learnt through this development :
- Practical skills were gained through scaled modelling
- Connecting and comparing reality and model space
- Discovering new martials to achieve specific objects within the room
Lighting is the most important technical aspect of any photograph or
video. Cameras, lenses, and everything else are completely irrelevant
unless you have good enough light to make a good photo or scene. No
amount of Photoshop or plug-in software filters can replicate good light.
Colour is such an everyday phenomenon that we don't usually give it a
lot of thought. But colors can produce surprising effects, for example, in
the way they mix together.
The color, direction, quantity, and quality of the light you use determines how
your objects appear. I have decided to take a video of the sunset through the
patterned curtains of my window. Through this process I have learnt many things
such as camera position and capturing the true aesthetics of light. In this case it was
successful in showing the difference between artificial lighting and natural lighting.

showing the difference between artificial lighting and natural lighting. Daylight and
sunlight are not a constant source, because they change hourly and with the weather,
season, location, and latitude. This changing daylight can alter the apparent shapes,
colors, tones, and forms of a scene. The color of sunlight changes most rapidly at the
extreme ends of the day. However there was an absence of a story/theme without any
sound.
Exercise A started with recording continues drops of water
to give the effect of rain. The next step was recording myself
blowing into the sound recorder to give the feeling of wind
and thunder. Following the merging both sounds together I
experienced a realistic atmosphere. This gave the video a theme
which was hard to imagine without sound.
As for exercise B I reversed the video giving the contrast
between sunset and sunrise .It was very challenging to record
sounds of nature so I went to a close by park to get a closer
look at the scenery. After the recording I realised there were
lots of unexpected sounds in the background. Finally it came
to me that there is two sides of Mother Nature the good and the
bad.
Memory is critical to humans and all other living organisms. Practically
all of our daily activities talking, understanding, reading, socializing
depend on our having learned and stored information about our
environments.
Memory allows us to retrieve events from the distant past or from
moments ago. It enables us to learn new skills and to form habits.
Without the ability to access past experiences or information, we
would be unable to comprehend language, recognize our friends
and family members, find our way home, or even tie a shoe. Life
would be a series of disconnected experiences, each one new and
unfamiliar. Without any sort of memory, humans would quickly
perish.
The project aims to create an environment that is perceptually engaging,
using real and virtual vision, sound and touch, with an emphasis on
promoting a sense of presence over a distance.
Understanding the word immersive was challenging at the start however
after facing the experience through every day routine I was able to pick
up on things that I was immersed in. I realised that everything that I was
immersed in was done through technology and sound. These two combined
describes our young generation and the new way of thinking. I tried capturing
this effect with light and sound to achieve strong and high quality video as
well as sound.
While playing this game I felt like I was part of it, almost as if I was in it.
This game made me feel alive and active due to the certain actions I had to
follow and it made my whole body move to the music. Dancing to the
crowds and hearing the sound of applause at the end was another thing that
creates a connection between the player and the game. It was very
entertaining and could take you to a another world you never knew existed.
Emoh, a task specifically planned to record our delay life routine
motions and gestures that we perform without notice. Only particular
movements are taken from a scene, using different parts of the house.
This is then played backwards to give a special effect that allows the
viewer to realize what really occurs in a home. In the midst of daily endeavours, most people seem to forget
being mindful of surroundings and automated events or actions
that take place without awareness. As a result, this task, which
was titled Emoh, aimed to increase mindful awareness of minor
daily motions. This task was initiated by collecting regular movements and
gestures that are performed on a daily basis without being
consciously aware. As expected, family forms an integral part
of many people's life, consequently, it was included in the research.
This was achieved by recording family members whilst performing
random activities, without notifying them that any filming was
taking place.
Subsequent to recording an hour of daily routines and activities
(such as eating, studying and communicating) the sequences of thefilm segments were then reversed to create a special effect and illusion,
increasing awareness and creativity.
Following the reversal of the film segments, those with potential for
creativity were selected for an attempt at exploring the normal activities
that are usually taken for granted and not well looked at.
creativity were selected for an attempt at exploring the normal activities
that are usually taken for granted and not well looked at.
Therefore, the creation of Emoh allows viewers to experience creativity
and explore the unique motions that arise as a result of simply reversingdaily gestures that are usually automated and not given any attention.
After successfully investigating what occurs within a home in detail,
the decision was then taken to carry out further research. Degraves
Under Path was a perfect example of a transitional space used regularly
by people to travel by transport. Taking a camera and recording people
walking through the space was required to gather information on how
people communicate with the space.

"norm" way of movement into an interesting manner which they are conscious
of. People are known to follow a set of laws without thinking since it's the right
way of doing things. By simply drawing lines using yellow and white duck tape
to direct people's movements throughout the space allowed them to communicate
with the space and themselves in a different remarkable way.
The result was not expected, this shows that people are constantly
doing things without any knowledge. It was interesting to see
people communicated with the space in a different way. In part of
the final video two different people were required to come very
close to each other, this was a happy moment to see people not
afraid to communicate within a dull place to create an exciting space.
